Loupiac :
This wine with controlled origin has been appreciated for a long time because it has followed a work of precision in the category of the noble-rotted white wines. As early as in the 4th century, a long time before its creation, the Roman poet Ausonius loved to glorify the vineyards in this region.
With a modest proportion of approximately 400 hectares for a number of 70 producers, the region has been able to preserve its values of quality along with its kind-hearted characteristic.
Properties with more than 10 hectares are rare and only the vineyards situated on slopes can be considered as "wine with controlled origin" . Therefore the annual production per hectare, which was limited to 40 hectolitres in 1936, approximately amounts to 35 hectolitres.
The Loupiac hill-sides, situated on the right side of the river Garonne (40 kilometres away from Bordeaux) give the best conditions to the cultivation of vineyards.
These small hills, with their calcareous subsoil basis and their clayey gravely tops have become less steep with erosion. Their rounded sides are composed of a clayey calcareous soil, which favours water draining. The vine, which is only planted on the hill-sides and the table-lands (to the exception of the alluvion and marsh soils) only retains what is necessary to its development, therefore allowing the concentration rate of grapes it produces.
Nature gives the tone which is taken after by the winegrowers : privileging quality over quantity.
